ANTELOPE ARENA – The Post Lady Lopes wrapped up their final game of the season against the Hale Center Lady Owls on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
The Lady Lopes lost by only nine points with a final score of 60-51.
“In district we did not finish anywhere near that we had hoped,” Head Coach Keith Bloskas said, “but we played in a lot of close games that we had a chance to win. The kids saw how close we were, and it kept them hungry as the season went along.”
The Lady Lopes finished their season 4-19 and district 1-9.
Although the Lady Lopes faced a rough year, Bloskas remains hopeful for next season.
“We have a young team and return a lot of key players next year,” he said, “so I think that our young kids got a lot of valuable varsity experience that should help next year. Hopefully that gives us an edge in finishing those close out games.”
Briley Miller, Jaylen Pittman, Marti Cruse, Camryn Cowley and Jacki Sanchez are the Lady Lopes’ five returning players. Sanchez was the top scorer of the night with 16 points followed closely by Miller with 15 and Cowley led the way in rebounds with an impressive 14.
Not only will the Lady Lopes benefit with their returning players, but also with those moving up from JV.
“We also have some good kids on the JV coming up,” Bloskas said. “These kids love to be in the gym and will work hard this offseason and summer in order to improve. Hopefully we have some leaders step up and help us do what is needed to improve for next season.”
As for seniors Sylvia Hernandez, Audrey Moreno and Lexi Turner, Bloskas thanks them for their influence on the team.
“We only had three seniors this season,” Bloskas said, “and I am thankful for their contributions to our program. They are all very smart, hardworking and have bring futures ahead of them.”
Overall, Bloskas is proud of what he and his team have achieved.
“This year was a tough year as far as wins and losses go,” he said, “but I feel like our team grew and got better as the season went along.”
