Southland School Board
By Dakota McDonald/The Post Dispatch—
Rocky Gomez was sworn-in during the Aug. 17 Southland ISD School Board meeting and will be completing the remainder of J. W. Bassinger’s term.
Bassinger announced he needs to step down for personal reasons.
Superintendent Toby Miller told the board the proposed tax rate es .96 cents per $100 property valuation. The board will discuss details of the budget and tax rate in greater detail at a future meeting.
The board also discussed the interlocal agreement with Post ISD. In the agreement, Southland ISD buses will be able to pick up students at the Historical Picnic Area just east of Hudman’s Greenhouse in Garza County.
Although the board expressed concerns with entering and exiting the area during foggy or icy weather, the board ultimately approved the agreement.
Miller reported there are currently 16 students who will be participating in asynchronous online learning. Teachers will record the lectures during face-to-face lessons and upload the video and documents needed for online students. Miller was given authorization to submit the asynchronous learning plan to the state.
Miller also reported the start of the 2020-21 school year has been successful thus far. Miller stated that teachers are following safety protocols and are checking students’ temperatures before they enter the classroom. Miller also said 60 new laptops have been purchased and are currently being set up for student use.
