Commissioners Court
By Dakota McDonald/The Post Dispatch
The burn ban, prohibiting
outdoor burning, was extended
for an additional 90 days
at the recent Garza County
Commissioners Court meeting.
According to the ban order,
outdoor burning of any
combustible material outside
of an enclosure which serves
to contain flames is prohibited.
Upon notification of
suspected outdoor burning,
the local fire department will
respond to the scene and take
immediate measures to contain
or extinguish the fire.
Labeled a Class C Misdemeanor,
individuals who are
suspected of outdoor burning
are punishable by a fine of up
to $500.
Additionally, the court
accepted a COVID-19 Response
Grant of $5,000
awarded to Garza County by
the Center for Tech and Civic
Life. The grant funds are
to be exclusively used for the
public purpose of planning
and operationalizing safe and
secure election administration.
The court also welcomed a
HART Intercivic representative
who demonstrated the
poll book, voting and tabulation
systems of new election
software being considered by
the court.
With Garza County already having applied forfunds to obtain a new election system, County Clerk Jim Plummer informed the commissioners that in order to implement new machines in the next election, a decision would need to be made by Jan. 1. No further action was taken.
In reports from County Offices, Emergency Management Coordinator Michael Isbell reported that he was unable to purchase updated portable police radios through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Grant for which he recently applied due to the grant not being applicable for purchase of the radios. Currently, 20 radios are needed as the ones in use are out-of-date and can no longer be repaired due to the original company no longer producing parts for the radios.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m., Nov. 9 at the Garza County Courthouse, 300 W. Main St.
