Garza County Commissioners made quick work of the agenda for their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, March 8.
The minutes from the special called meeting on March 1 were approved where votes were canvassed for the February 23 special election to fill the House District 68 postion recently vacated by Drew Springer.
The court also approved the accounts payable as presented along with budget amendment requests.
Sheriff Terry Morgan reported the jail inmate count is at 85, with 47 Garza County inmates. Morgan addressed the plumbing issues at the facilities sally port. The area experienced busted pipes due to the sub-zero temperatures. Repairs have been made along with preventative measures. The cost totaled $8,500, with the fund coming from the commissary funds rather than the department’s budget.
Mike Travis, Garza County Veterans Service Office, addressed the court and explained his purpose is to assist Garza County veterans with various issues.
Judge Lee Norman informed the court that the Trailblazers Senior Citizen Center is expected to reopen for in-person services in April. Norman added that the courthouse would continue to practice the safety guidelines in place.
Emergency Management Coordinator Michael Isbell told commissioners he is working on a Disaster Summary for the recent sub-zero temperatures which caused problems throughout the area. He said FEMA funds should be available to reimburse expenses, but the amount is not known at this time. Isbell also said he was working on grants for backup generators for the county, specifically for the EMS facility.
Tax Assessor/Collector Nancy Wallace informed the court that Deputy Tax Assessor Terri Laurence will retire at the end of March.
Commissioners approved to accept the reports as presented. The meeting was adjourned with the next regular scheduled meeting set for Monday, March 22.
County officials present included Jim Plummer, Ted Weems, Terry Morgan and Nancy Wallace. Also present were Carol Williams, Christy Tadlock, Michael Isbell, Terry Bartlett, Thomas Taylor, Mike Travis and Julia Childs.
