June 28 will mark 50 years of Holly’s Drive-in owned and operated by the Lewis and Mary Nell Holly and family. Lewis passed away in 2001 and Mary Nell has continued to carry on the family business still located 615 South Broadway.
Mary Nell said, “We never thought we would be cooking and serving hamburgers for 50 years when we opened the drive-in. It was a way to make a living for us and our three children after moving back from California.”
“Lewis was working in an airplane factory in California when he was hurt on the job. While he was home recuperating, I went to work at a donut shop down the street from our home. We had a car payment and rent, plus we had three babies to feed,” Mary Nell reminisced. “But when an earthquake threw us out of bed one morning Lewis called his brother Bill in Texas to come get us.”
