Austin Moreno is the head girls basketball and head track and field coach for Southland High School. He is also an assistant for the football team. Moreno teaches mathematics for Southland.
Moreno grew up in Georgetown, TX and he graduated from East View High School in Georgetown in 2016. He then graduated college from Lubbock Christian University with a degree in Exercise Sports Science in 2020.
During his time at LCU, Moreno was an intern coach for Lubbock Christian High School for two years. After graduating from LCU, Moreno joined the Southland coaching staff where he started his head coaching career leading the track program. Moreno will take over as head coach this upcoming school year for the Lady Eagles basketball program.
Moreno’s favorite hobbies consist of watching and playing football and basketball, CrossFit, and spending time with his wife, Jenny. Moreno said the biggest influences in his life are his wife, his parents, Pilar and Susan, and his grandfather, Dr. Fred Hilgeman. Moreno’s favorite quote is, “You can’t be great until you are consistently good.”
Moreno has great expectations for the upcoming school year in both basketball and track.
“For basketball, I expect to have an experienced team and make a run in the playoffs,” he said. “Hopefully we will be a fast team that can run and move the ball well. For track, I expect to be back in regionals with a handful of athletes.”
“Southland has given me and my wife a second family. The kids are awesome to be around and our administration is second to no one. I love the people I work with and building relationships with these kids.”
