The Borden County Football teams played the Sterling City Eagles this past week with two junior high games being played on Thursday and the varsity game being played at home for the 2021 Coyotes season opener. The Coyotes still don’t have the ability to play a junior varsity game, due to numbers and real-life issues in the Coyote football family.
The Borden County Pups started the difficult football week for the program as they came up short in both games in Sterling City, losing game 1 as the Red Team lost to the Sterling City B team 37 to 26. The Blue Team followed that game with a tough 19 to 7 loss to the Sterling City A team. Then the rough week was culminated with a very difficult loss to the #2 Ranked Eagles 52 to 0.
The Borden County Varsity played host to the second ranked and defending State Champion Sterling City Eagles. This contest like the others got off to a rough start. The Eagles took the opening kick and marched methodically down the field for a quick score to go up 8-0. The Coyotes seemed poised to answer as Rhett Kingston followed some nice blocks from ends Brandt Behrens and Landen Foree, center Mason Adcock, fullback Ishmael Rodriguez and quarterback Koda Bigham for a quick 30 yard-run, in fact it appeared he might score. Unfortunately, a couple plays later, a fumble turned into an interception and the Coyotes were back on their heals playing defense. The Eagles scored again to make it 14 to 0. The Coyotes again started out promising on offense moving inside Eagle territory for a second straight time only to have another turnover, this time a fumble. The Eagles again pounced on the opportunity and now it was 22 to 0. Another Coyote turnover resulted in more struggles for the Coyotes as things just seemed to snowball from there. The Coyotes would drop a couple of passes in the second quarter that might have given the home team coyotes a little life but in the end the Eagles just seemed to have more to prove, and the route was on ending this contest at half 52 to 0.
The Coyotes will next host another Top 5 team in the Water Valley Wildcats on Friday, Sept. 24. The Borden County Pups will play before the varsity game, as they will start at 5 p.m. while the varsity game will begin at 7:30.
