Rita Nelson, 1920 – 2024

Rita Faye Mathis Nelson departed this earthly life on May 27, 2024. She was born to Ben and Willie Mathis on September 24, 1930, in Post, TX. She graduated from Post High School and married Elwood Nelson in 1947.

Rita worked in several capacities at the First National Bank of Post for almost 50 years. After retirement, she volunteered at the University Medical Center gift shop for more than 20 years and was also heavily involved in the First Baptist Church. Rita touched the lives of countless people in her various roles. She was an avid traveler, visiting many countries and areas of the United States.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years Elwood Nelson, second husband Alton Clary, brother Bennie Mathis, and sisters Cleada Brown, Jewell Jones, Helen Jones and Doris Riddle.

Rita is survived by daughter Dr. Patti & Dennis May of Lubbock; son, Ricky Nelson of Clovis NM; granddaughters Katrina & Clint Foster of Lubbock and Jennifer Nelson of San Antonio; greatgrandsons Corbin and Connor Foster of Lubbock, and great-granddaughter Ellie Arrendondo of San Antonio. Surviving nephews and nieces include Janice McWilliams, Robert Brown, Kenny Riddle, Donna Rongholt, Delores Redman, Jane Widdick, Sue Meek, Joan Gross, Joy McMillan, Melinda Morgan, Danny Nelson, Brenda Hooper, Kenny LeMond, Ronnie LeMond, Dewayne Martin and Miriam Martin.

Services were held at First Baptist Church on May 30, 2024. Interment was at Terrace Cemetery under the direction of Hudman Funeral Home.
