Helen Thomas

1948-2025

Helen Thomas, 93, of Slaton passed from this life to the next on March 4, 2025, following a brief hospitalization.

Helen was born on Aug. 26, 1931, to Clark and Velma Barton in the Pleasant Valley Community of Garza County. She graduated from Southland High School in 1948 along with her life-long best friend Joy Scot Pool. Helen was a long-time member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.

In 1953, Helen married the love of her life B. L. (Shug) Thomas. This union would last 70 wonderful years filled with adventure, travels and delightful memories. In the past year, Helen has had to endure the loss of her beloved husband and best friend.

Helen is survived by her sons: Kirk of Wolforth, TX and Kel (Jacqui) of Basin, WY. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She approached life with quiet dignity and grace, never seeking the limelight. As Shug’s health began to render him unable to carry out the business decisions and obligations of farm ownership Helen, in her late 80s, stepped up to learn the business tasks associated with farming.

Visitation and celebration of life were held at Hudman Funeral Home on Monday, March 10, 2025. Rev. James Martin officiated. A graveside service was held at Terrace Cemetery in Post.

Thomas’ family would like to thank Wayne and Carol McDonald and Frances Gomez for years of faithful friendship and love. We would also like to thank the staff and management of the Library of Legacies in Slaton for providing a warm and nurturing environment in which the last few years of both Helen and Shug’s lives were spent.

Memorial contributions can be made to Post First Baptist Church or Slaton Library of Legacies.
