LARUE JONES

LaRue Jones, 8 9 , passed away on Jan. 11, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas. She was born on Mar. 19, 1934, at Two Draw Lake in Post, Texas to Roy and Ollie Stevens. She married Billy Guinn Jones on Dec. 25, 1957. A graduate of Post High School, LaRue received her BBS in Education from Hardin Simmons University where she was a member of the Cowgirls. This group of ladies, HSU’s original pep squad, entertained people across Texas for 49 years.

She worked for Standlin Oil before beginning her teaching career of 20 years. She taught school in Brownfield, Snyder, and Levelland. Following her retirement in 1989, she returned to the profession she loved as a substitute teacher.

LaRue enjoyed growing up at Two Draw Lake and later going to dances with her mother and father. She met and married the love of her life, and they enjoyed a wonderful life together. She cherished all of the many friendships she made while teaching and always loved seeing her former students and hearing of their successes. She loved her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren very much and will be greatly missed by her family. LaRue was a member of First Baptist Church, Levelland. She loved old movies, pretty shoes, and her time at Capital Elementary. To quote one of her favorite movies, “If I had not worked at Capital, I would have paid to get in.” Although her recent years kept her close to home, visiting with family and friends kept her going as they shared treasured memories and some hilarious secrets.

LaRue was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her son, Steve and wife Carrla of Levelland; daughter, D’Les of Dallas; three grandchildren, Tye and wife Julie of Klein, Caycee and husband Matt of New Home, and Cyanne Jones of Lubbock; her greatgrandchildren Sterling, Lyncoln, and Brock Taylor and Elodie and Harrison Jones, sister-in-law Cerretha Rose of Cedar Park; and two nieces and a nephew.

Services were held Wednesday, Jan.17, 2024, at First Baptist Church in Levelland, with Cody Favor officiating. Graveside followed at Terrace Cemetery in Post.

The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church Library, P. O. Box 700, Levelland, Texas 79336.
