Steven Mills Kirk passed from this life on Saturday, August 24, 2024, in a local Corpus Christi hospital with his wife and daughter beside him.
Born May 16, 1953, to Clayton Kirk and Geneva Ruth Broom Kirk in San Juan, Texas, Steve is survived by his loving wife Linda Pitchford Kirk (he loved introducing her as his kindergarten girlfriend, which was true). Steve loved entertaining and sharing stories, and one of his favorites was the story of Linda and him. He was a proud father and is survived by both daughters Kelsey Kirk Mulder of Corpus Christi and Kayla Kirk of San Marcos, Texas. He was a doting Pop-Pop to his two grandchildren, Elliott Noelle Almanza and Brody Clay Mulder. Steve is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and shared a wonderful Uncle relationship with his special Kylie and Kassidy Pitchford. A host of cousins, relatives and many friends will miss and remember Steve.
Steve attended schools throughout South Texas and graduated from Nixon High School in Laredo. He earned a BS degree in Agriculture Economics from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. He spent most of his career years in the oil and gas industry with CP&L, Albemarle Corp., Vernon Faulkner Inc. and Trinity River Energy. Steve operated his own production lease company and partnered with a vacuum truck company for years in Hebbronville and Freer. He operated a consulting business in oil and gas with clients such as the Rachal Foundation of Corpus and as superintendent for George R. Brown Partnership for their Garza County production. Steve owned two radio stations in Bay City and counted those years asn some of the most fun in his career path.
As an avid outdoorsman, Steve enjoyed fishing, hunting and his “arrowhead and artifact” hunts. He was the consummate horseman and cowboy, spending many hours working cattle when he had his place in Hebbronville, as well as ranch working with friends. He was licensed as both a fixed-wing pilot and a rotorcraft pilot. Steve’s passion was music, and he had such joy picking up his guitar to pick and sing with his friends. He was always known as an excellent athlete, starting in elementary school when he won all three challenges in the local Punt, Pass & Kick competition. Steve went on to play football in school and loved his years of participation in adult softball leagues. This is where he made many friendships that have continued throughout his life.
Steve was the ultimate storyteller and never met a stranger. He was known for his very giving, generous heart. He served as President and a Board of directors for the Corpus Christi American Cancer Society as well as on the Board of Directors in Baton Rouge, La. He was on the Board of Directors for United Way in Bay City, Texas. In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he served two terms as President and on the Board of Directors for ‘Dreams Come True’, a charitable organization for terminally ill children and this was one of his greatest joys and privileges.
Graveside services were held Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Bazette Prairie Point. Cemetery in Kerens, Texas. Steve loved God and was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ. Bro. Travis Sweet of Post, Texas, will preach the funeral, assisted by Steve’s brothersin- law Eddy Pitchford of Coahoma and Jimmy Pitchford of Ennis, Texas. Pallbearers were George Lopez, Carter Handcock, Bruce Luttrell, Shane Lutrell, Tony Smith and Jeremiah Cohn.
