James Warren Mitchell III, affectionally known as Jimmy, Daddy, and Jammy, walked on to heaven’s first tee box on May 2, 2023. Born to James Warren Mitchell, Jr. and Mary Irene Craig Mitchell on November 13, 1944 at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Jimmy was the joy of his parents’ lives.

He grew up fishing, tinkering, and working alongside his dad, while giving his mom many gray hairs from his teenage shenanigans. In 1963, Jimmy graduated from Post High School and went on to attend and graduate from West Texas State University in 1967. An entrepreneur at heart, he sold auto parts from the trunk of his car for college beer money, which continued to strengthen his mom’s prayer life. In 1968, Jimmy was deployed to Vietnam as part of the U.S. Army. After honorably serving his country, he safely returned home in November 1969, much to the gratitude of his family and friends. For nearly 30 years, he owned Garza Auto Parts, first in partnership with his dad and then as sole proprietor.

Jimmy met the love of his life, Cynthia Ann Davis, after being introduced by family friends. They married on July 16, 1972 and celebrated 50 years of marriage last summer. The next year, they welcomed their first child, Jimmy’s pride and joy, James (Jay) Warren Mitchell IV. A few years later, daughter Alissa Leigh Mitchell completed their family and immediately had her daddy wrapped around her finger.

Raised by two dedicated community servants, Jimmy was passionate about investing his time developing young people into future leaders. An Eagle Scout himself, he served as the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 316 for many years where he impacted many young men’s lives and saved a few, too. His son, Jay, also earned his Eagle Scout rank under Jimmy’s leadership.

In 1999, Jimmy and Cindy moved to Lubbock, Texas, where they were actively involved in Broadway Church of Christ. In 2017, they moved to Horseshoe Bay, Texas, where he resided at the time of his passing. He attended Lake Shores Church in Marble Falls and enjoyed a last supper with his men’s Bible study group that would make most men jealous.

Jimmy will be remembered as a gentle soul with a dry sense of humor, who lived life on his terms but always in service to God and his country. He loved his family immensely and was a dedicated friend. He was passionate about music and cars, and his kids could always count on him to check their tires and remindthemoftheimportance of proper auto maintenance. Jimmy loved to fish, hunt, and travel, and he especially enjoyed making lifelong memories during road trips with family and friends to Creede, Colorado (and surrounding areas), and throughout the United States in his Corvette.

Jimmy is survived by his loving wife Cindy; son Jay Mitchell of Austin and his children with Stephanie, Ellie, Jenna, Haley and Jace; daughter Alissa (Joe) Cantrell of Montgomery, Alabama and their children Jamison and Keagan; and many other loved ones and friends.

A celebration of life, with military honors, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 30, 2023 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in his honor to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Scottish Rite for Children, or the charity of your choice.
